A European flour millers' delegation in Beijing to discover the China grain chain

A delegation of European flour millers went to Beijing in September 2019. The objective was to discover the China grain chain and its functioning, from the sourcing of raw materials to the consumption of bakery products.

Meeting with local stakeholders

The delegation met a wide range of experts to discuss the following issues:

  • An introduction to EU-China trade relationships, exchange with Aleksandra Kozlowska and Damien Plan (respectively First Secretary and Counsellor for Agriculture at the Delegation of the EU to China)
  • What is the China National Association of the Grains Sector (CNAGS)? Its role in the wheat sector and its perspectives, exchange with Ms Zhao Yi (Director General at Chinal Association of Grain Sector)
  • What is the China National Cereals, Oilseeds and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), its role in the wheat sector and perspectives?, exchange with Mr Chen Bing (Manager at COFCO Wheat)
  • An overview of China wheat market and prospects for breeding, exchange with Mr Li Lyon (Head of Marketing Seeds China)
  • The China flour milling industry, presentation by Prof Li Dongsen and exchange with Philipp Fritschi, Director GF Food Technology Asia at Bühler China

Visit of bakery stores, manufacturing plants and retailers

  • Visit of Western-style cafés and bakery stores in Sanlitun district with Mr Mhiao Zhuqun, Chairman of the Bakery Store Committee and Mr Chen Xiang (China Association of Bakery & Confectionery Industry)
